What is E-Passport for India?

India is introducing a change in its passports, the new e-passports will be a biometric setup based passport for people travelling to India. This e-passport consists of an electronic chip that will have storage access to the basic data of the passenger. This basic data includes the traveller’s name, which country are they national, and their birth information.

Biometric Facility of the Passport:

India is one of the many countries yet to introduce biometric passports for the public. The concept of a biometric passport is not new to the country as it does have that facility available to diplomatic passports and passports for official activities. The globally accepted method for biometric microphonic chip on the front of a passport will soon be introduced in the Indian passport as well. This can be used to later confirm if the holder’s passport is biometric based or not.

Introduction of the E-passport for the Public:

The first Indian biometric-based passport was created for the president of the country at that time. This exact concept is now being applied to public passports. The Indian government has decided to provide the manufacturing rights of their e-passports to the International Civil Aviation Organization on a contract basis.

Benefits of Creating the Biometric Passport:

With the help of e-passports, travellers can get done with their border security checks a lot faster than usual and the authorities don’t have to have extreme security checks. These e-passports provide:

  • An easier solution for immigrants to get verified.
  • Help lessen fake passports being used.
  • Stop the creation of passport frauds.

How Will the Indian E-passport Work?

Normal passports require extra time and effort for confirming all the information of the traveller as well as the validity of their passport. The e-passport is intended to change this. With the help of an e-passport, travellers will not have to wait in the queues for long time periods and they can simply cross the designated e-passport gates. It will also increase the security for the travellers and their information as well as decrease the time they have to spend at the airport.

What Data is Stored on the E-passport?

The e-passport increases security for travelling by holding unique confirmed information of the holder in its electronic chip. This chip holds all the necessary information of the traveller including their photo which will help rule out any frauds and confirm that the holder is valid.

The chip holds all the information inside the passport but also prevents unauthorized personnel from accessing the personal data of the holder.

Other Countries Offering E-passports:

Because of all the benefits following an Indian e-visa, more than one hundred countries globally are already using e-passports. The most known names include the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.

What Type of Passport You Need to Apply for Visa in India?

There are no restrictions applied on the type of passport that the traveller holds. Both a traditional passport and an e-passport are valid to acquire a visa or an e-visa for India. The only requirement followed by both the passport types is that the expiry date should have a minimum cushion of six months to the traveller’s stay in India. If the expiry time is less than six months, the visa will not be granted but this is solely due to the expiry date rather than the passport type.

Applying for an Indian Visa Using E-passport:

The requirements for applying for an e-visa are still unchanged and will remain unchanged after the introduction of the e-passport. All you need to do is go to the official e-visa site for the Indian visa, enter the asked information along with the expiry date of your e-passport or general passport and you will be assigned an e-visa to travel to India.
